A call for old RAM - mikebw - 12-11-2007

So I just finished installing 10.4 on my second beige G3 (see my post on getting it to work on the first G3 here- http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/396705/396705) and it's running OK. Only problem is I only have 160MB of RAM and that's really bad. 64+64+32 = Sad

Does anyone here have extra / unused / unwanted PC100 RAM? It's 168-pin DIMMs, PC66 or PC133 will work too. Looking for any 128's or 256's, please let me know what you've got if anything. I pay shipping!

I will also be checking LEM but thought I would check here first.
Thanks!

I'd like to see more sincerity and groveling first.....

Re: A call for old RAM - mikebw - 12-11-2007

Oh you have no idea how bad it is. ::o

160MB is just grueling. Disk activity is off the charts...

I don't know how long I can take this- help me please!!!

Are you just doing it "because you can"?

You don't really expect good performance, right?

Re: A call for old RAM - Jimmypoo - 12-11-2007

Well... he could clock any Beige at 300. And I'm running it now on a Pismo at 400, without tons of difference between it and my 1.42 Mini - for surfing and email.

So it is certainly possible (drive speeds would suck without an ATA card....)

What ROM card do you have in this machine?? I never got mine to load - but I've never tried XPostoFacto whatever on the Rev A rom.

I think I most certainly do have some 128s around.... but gee, they were going to make such nice ornaments.....

Re: A call for old RAM - mikebw - 12-11-2007

Yeah pretty much. On the other one I have 768MB RAM so I know what the difference will be like, and I think it would be worth a few bucks (just a couple) to get it going.

I do have a legitimate use for these computers, so it's not just crazy experimentation, now that I know it will work.

Re: A call for old RAM - mikebw - 12-11-2007

I've actually got a 400MHz G3 in there with 1MB L2 cache which helps a lot.

Drive speeds do suck, tops out at 16.7MB/sec.

I know I have rev B or C ROMs in both as I had multiple drives on each bus before when I ran OS 9.

If you want ornaments I can trade you. How about some 30-pin SIMMS?!

Re: A call for old RAM - geon - 12-11-2007

I've got a stick that came of of my B&W G3 but not sure what size it is. My machine has three 256 and one 128 in it now. PC100

Re: A call for old RAM - mikebw - 12-11-2007

hmm, I think those shipped with 64 as the base config

Re: A call for old RAM - geon - 12-11-2007

Yeah, I'm thinking it's a 64.

PC100-323-620

I'm getting pretty close to retiring this machine, then I'll have a few sticks ....
