Installing Leopard with Migration Assistant... - SKYLANE - 12-12-2007

Migration Assistant....

I am ready to install Leopard on my MacBook Pro tomorrow. I plan to do one of the following methods:

(1) Clean install Leopard and manually load all software again

(2) Clean install Leopard and use Migration Assistant to take bring in applications/date/etc. (I have Tiger completely backed up on external drive to assist in the migration)

I am leaning towards method (2) unless any specific reasons to go with method (1).

Unless you like to do a lot of unnecessary work (ugh, the pain of reinstalling apps with each serial) just do an Archive and Install and check the retain personal settings button. That will give you your clean install w/o the hassle of reinstalling s/w and settings. I did it this way with 5 Mac and had zero probs other than the known DivX and Application Enhancer conflicts. Remove those from the Library if you have them.

I used Option 2, and things are smooth as silk so far (did the upgrade on Sunday). My system is running so much better now than it was before, it's not even funny.

One suggestion: use CCC to make a disk image of your current install onto another hard drive, then wipe your main drive/boot partition before you install Panther, just to make doubly sure you have a clean install. Once the new OS is up and running, mount the backup image and recover your old stuff from there with Migration Assistant. Worked great for me.

Make sure that the external drive (with the clone of your current drive) is bootable before you erase your computer's HD.

Actually it only has to be bootable if you want to boot from it (which you might, if you needed to do a pure CCC recovery). If you feel safe enough with the backup image, you can (and if fact you have to) reboot directly from the 10.5 installer disk and press from there. Once 10.5 is installed, you boot in Leopard, mount the backup image, and then migrate.
