Is Bobby Petrino the jerk ESPN says he is? - Dennis S - 12-13-2007

ESPN is ragging on the new Arkansas football coach. His record is certainly a series of short stays and he left the Falcons in a lurch. However, I heard he was hired without being told about the troubles Michael Vick was in, although management knew it was coming.

I would've bolted Atlanta earlier than that if I were he. Once Vick was gone, what was the point?

Bobby P. IS a jerk. No doubt about that. He gave up on his team and slinked out of town in the dead of night. Jerk.

The Vick situation took all by "surprise." Vick told Falcons team owner, Arthur Blank and the NFL commish, Roger Goodell he was not involved in dog fighting on several occassion and that the DA was "barking" up the wrong tree. Everyone took Vick on face value. The Falcons even went so far as to trade their very capable 2nd string QB Matt Schaub to make a statement: Vick IS our QB. Petrino, as Falcons coach, was part of this decision.

Petrino is a prima donna that can't stand the heat so he is getting out of the kitchen. Any coach with a solid set takes the circumstances that meet his team. What if Vick wasn't indicted but broke his collar bone first game of the season. The Falcons would likely have the same record as now since Vick wouldn't be playing. Would it then be OK for Petrino to leave before the season was over. Hells no. Coaches don't do that. At least ones that have any character. You take the lumps and deal.

So yeah, Petrino is a pansy arse girly man that cries b/c his team loses b/c he doesn't have what it takes to be an NFL coach. Back to the minors for him, just like Nick Saban before him. Good riddance.

No. Arthur Blank is an ass. The falcons are thankless, and stupid for hinging everything on Vick. They also knew about Vick and all of his BS criminal and questionable behavior.

None of this is new to the game of football. Overpaid thugs and the quest to win.

Yes, AB is an ass. But this is about Petrino, not Blank. Yes, Blank knew about Vick's "hobby." But no one thought it was to the extent it happened to be. No one though Vick was going to be indicted. Had they had even a 10% believe they would have held Schuab back rather than dealing him.

The Entertainment and Sports Programming Network likes to sensationalize the big, and not so big stories in the realm it covers, like any other media outlet. However...

If I were being paid $4M/year, I'd at least have the decency to finish out the year. It's not like he bolted a clerk position at QuikEMart for a manager position at 7Eleven.

With guys like Petrino, Saban, and Miles, there's no question who they're looking out for. They're no JoePas, that's for sure.

It's all about winning. That wasn't gonna happen in Atlanta in the near future. You have to make your moves while you have market value. Arkansas like jobs are far and few. UCLA is looking at Norm Chow (great).

If I were Petrino, I would have taken the Razorback job, but would have finished the season. They wouldn't have wanted him to, so it would have been more on the Falcons for him being gone.

The Falcons should have hired Lovie Smith. I'll bet he would have resolved the whole Vick situation.

Yes, it's all about winning and Petrino wasn't getting it done. You act like the Falcons losing is 100% b/c of the players and Petrino had no influence on the Falcons record. Obviously you aren't a Falcons fan and haven't closely watched all his dumb moves this year. (For better or worse, I've watched every game, been to many of the home games, and read all the postgame articles). The Falcons players are not the best in the NFL true, but w/ a half way decent coach they did have the potential to be a .500 team this year. They lost a lot of close ones due to bad plays set up by...Petrino. When you coach in the bigs there is no excuse to further demoralize your team by skipping out w/ 3 games just so you can go so you can line your pockets and take an early vacation.

A coach can look out for #1 during the off-season, but during the season he needs to look out for the team. What he did shows his poor character. He could have gone to Ark in Jan just as easily. I'm glad he's gone now, to be sure, but the team did not deserve this treatment. As Lawyer Malloy wrote on Petrino's "goodbye" letter...."Coward." You'd be one too if you'd leave like Petrino in the middle of the night w/ 3 games to go in a horrendous season you helped to engineer.

What's "character" got to do with winning? As a Raider's fan (pity me), JUST WIN BABY.

I "knew" it was a mistake to hire Petrino. I "knew" Vick needed more than him. These days, the good coaches and players refuse to be traded or hired by teams that aren't in contention. If Petrino's character was so terrible, why does Arkansas want him? They can hire just about any coach in the land.

I don't care about the character of the Dodgers, Lakers and Raiders (and to a lesser extent, the 9'ers), just win the dang games.

[edit] I know there is good talent on the Falcons, but what would happen if Manning and Brady were gone. The entire Falcon's team was built around Vick. Since talent like his doesn't grow on trees, it was time to bolt.

Petrino better do well. It is a terrific job he is taking. Being a successful coach at a big time program is like heaven on earth. Heck of an opportunity. However he better not fail because all the bridges are burnt now. He can not even fall back on the resting place of bad coaches ESPN and other broadcast jobs.

The owner's acting if Petrino was Brutus is way over the top. I mean finishing the season with this team is important? i would have not been able to tell you who their coach was nor cared. Too bad for Atlanta fans who have had to suffer through this and can only look forward to worse. Getting a primo coach to go there is going to be tough. Gee's I heard Jack Pardee mentioned. Isn't he dead? Just kidding Jack.
