Holy Batpoop! this 28" monitor is BIG (and bright)... - Buzz - 12-13-2007

wimped out after jonesin' for a Samsung 275T 27" 1920 X1200 monitor, which is at least $925, or more, delivered, and opted for the 28" Hanns-g HG281D for several hundred $$$ less ($499 Costco.com special last week) for same resolution that is actually big enough for old fart eyes to see. DVI works great, have read a few reviews that say VGA is sometimes lacking, but haven't tried the analog port yet to find out. did notice that by swapping Samsung 20" to the PCI Radeon 9200 from the AGP Radeon 9600, it lost a noticeable amount of its former pizzazz, seemingly verifying that the 9600 is a better card than the 9200... just wish the 9600 would place nice w/ two monitors attached to it. I'll probably try swapping again within a couple of weeks and putting both monitors on the 9600's dual DVI heads, as I reinstalled the ATI drivers again after experiencing some funky screen stuff last go-round w/ two displays hooked to the 9600. couldn't find any definitive fixes for wonky 9600 performance, but it works great only one monitor attached to it, and it doesn't seem to matter which port is used. any help, or pointers to get two monitors to play consistently nice w/ the 9600 will be appreciated.

G5 X.X?

i ran 1920 X 1200 and 1600 X 1200 on my stock 64 meg 9600 for a couple of years

oh, and try the freeware "shades" for the brightness issue

G4, w/ G5 AGP card, X.4.11, brightness at 25 & contrast at 84 for now, will try "shades," thanks..., but more concerned w/ dual monitor issue than brightness, since it seems to be tougher to solve...

jdc - thanks for the info on "shades". I just got a 24" Acer and the brightness is killing me. Even with brightness and contrast set to 50 each, it's still way brighter than I'm used to.

I would try setting the monitor's brightness and contrast lower than "50" if possible.

I use Shades because I can't set the brightness (no contrast adjustment) *any* lower. The problem with Shades (for me, anyway) is that it just dims the screen and allows no adjustment for contrast. So when it's dimmed enough in low ambient light, some detail is lost.

I'd like to be able to dim the screen but increase the contrast a shosh.

RAMd®d, try the shareware DarkAdapted X. It gives every conceivable option for brightness, contrast and gamma. You can even configure different settings for each display on dual monitors.

The free version offers most features, but for $10 you get more control over your monitors that you thought possible.
