eBaying annoyance - ho'ard - 12-19-2007

I list an item. Purchased via buy it now the morning it lists.

My ad text (fairly simple, uncluttered listing)

Money Order preferred. Personal check by express permission only after review of your account. (in bold, larger type with emphasis, etc.)

Buyer's immediate communication:

i'LL SEND THE MONEY ORDER TOMORROW. PLEASE, SEND ME THE ITEM AS SOON AS YOU GET THE CHECK.

One week later (i.e. just now), I receive a =personal check= . . .

12 feedback buyer, mostly positive, a neutral for being too quick on the neg button. . .

Annoying.

So, I have oddly little experience accepting and cashing personal checks . . .

It's a bank called "SunTrust" in Florida. Do most, or at least many banks have some sort of way to check availability of funds?
If I deposit it and it bounces, do I incur fees?
Thanks for any general wisdom . . .

We don't accept checks but on the odd occasion when we get one like this, and we have,
we submit them to our Credit Union as the bad checks fees aren't as high. For the most
part we have not had a problem with personal checks but most people that send checks
aren't patient enough to wait it out and start demanding their stuff so we say no personal
checks period in our description.

I have added, when I accepted checks, that up to a 2 week delay is to be expected, as I don't ship until the check has cleared my bank.

Re: eBaying annoyance - ho'ard - 12-19-2007

Thanks. So it sounds like pretty much every bank charges the account holder if they deposit a check and it bounces?

dk, technically I didn't accept the check . . . I'd be afraid that the reader would take your statement as blanket permission to send a check.
Next time I'll just say "money order only". I frequently ask sellers if they'll take a MO when they say Paypal only, and they almost always agree to.

Re: eBaying annoyance - incognegro - 12-19-2007

I wasn't saying you accepted it, sorry if it sounded that way.

Seems as though the person who sent you the check didn't understand the difference between money order and check, or just ran out of time & sent a check anyway.

It would suck to incur a bounced check charge; I'd contact the buyer and inform them that before you deposit the check, they could A. send you a money order instead and you will VOID or return their check, or B. agree to pay any fees incurred by you if the check should bounce.

At least let them know what they did is going to slow down their item and give them a chance to pay with a M.O. if they choose.

If the check is going to bounce do you really think they are going to pay the fees just because they said so?

Re: eBaying annoyance - NewtonMP2100 - 12-19-2007

happens all the time for me on ebay. . .I say clearly "money order accepted as payment, no peronal checks" and I will inevitably get a personal check. . .

depending on the feedback I will accept it and then tell them it will take 2 weeks to clear. . .if the feedback is really bad then I won't take it. . .

Re: eBaying annoyance - Michael - 12-19-2007

There was a time when you could call the bank and read off the numbers and they'd tell you whether the account was real and whether there was enough in the account to cover the check. I haven't done that in 20 years, but I'd give it a shot. SunTrust's number is 800.786.8787.

Also, my daughter's SunTrust checks have some security features, including a faint "Original Document" on the back that apparently won't photocopy. If the check you got doesn't have them, I'd be skeptical.

Re: eBaying annoyance - ho'ard - 12-19-2007

We're talking about a not huge amount, so i don't think anyone's going to fake a check, but thanks for the tips. And the footwork on the number. I looked at their site but didn't see much.
TCF has a verification number I call every month to make sure a tenant's check is covered.

Anyways, I think I'll probably just send the item now, deposit the check at my convenience, and lick the buyer's boots.

I always list as "PayPal Only". I usually get requests to pay by money order and evaluate them on a case-by-case basis.
