don't waste your time at CompUSA's going out of biz sale - AllGold - 12-19-2007

In case you still have a store nearby, well, you probably knew better anyway but just in case...

They have "up to 20%" off everything in the store. Translated, that means a few things are 20% off but most of it is 10% or even 5% off. Plus those percentages are off regular price; they have no weekly sale prices or specials which even without the percentage discount would normally be cheaper.

The only thing that might have been worth considering is 10% off Apple accessories. I say might have because they don't have any keyboards or MacBook power adapters, etc. left. Computers are 5% off.

But the real killer: ALL SALES FINAL, NO RETURNS. That includes returns or exchanges for defective merchandise. Once it leaves the store, they won't take it back. Bah.

No wonder they're going out of business...

As with the last round of store closings, discounts get greater with each passing week.

By week 5 many items should be prices well below retail.

By week 12 there should be some really good deals.

By week 14 those attractive display cases could be yours at dramatically discounted prices. Smile

This is already week 2 but the discounts are the same as week 1.

As microchip said, there's a good reason they're going out of business. Still, they stayed in there for a good long while, eh?

You have to understand that these 'going out of business stores' are NOT Comp-USA. They are a liquidator. Comp-USA sold the whole kit and caboodle to the liquidator. You will also find that the liquidator will bring in some inventory from some other place and try to pass it off (usually cheap junk) as being quality stuff. AND raise the 'base prices' to above MSRP, so that the 10% off is really MSRP or above.

Stay away.

In NJ the price drops all happened on Sundays (Mondays in Bergen County). I just went in early Sunday mornings to see if there was anything worth buying. On the last day the remnants were 90% off list price.

The big ticket consumer items went pretty fast, but I did find some very cheap bluetooth and/or airport extreme upgrade kits from the service dept -- kits that were supposed to be available to Apple authorized service providers only. Also found a bunch of rolling metal Eagle shelving units at a very good price.

Was reading in a CR Smart Shopper mag this past weekend about when a sale is not a sale. The key is the MSRP. Thats all it is. A SUGGESTED price. Stores can put what they want on it, then mark it down from there. What a load.

When they went out in my area the sales start getting good in the final weeks, so go again in Mid Jan. I was able to pick up about 3 .Mac Family Packs for $40 each and a Tivoli iSongBook for $119 (which I then turned around and sold on eBay for $225...decided I didn't want it, didn't buy specifically to eBay). I also picked up some accessories for my then Treo for almost free. I never got around to opening them and they came in handy when I sold it a couple months later after I got my iPhone.
