unexpected benefit from more RAM - bazookaman - 12-19-2007

My MacPro used to have 5gb which i thought was A LOT. One thing i noticed was that my apps, particularly the Adobe ones, but sometimes others would take FOREVER to quit. They would launch in 2 seconds, but InDesign for example would sometimes take over 2 minutes to quit.

I recently installed another 4gb of RAM. And one thing I have noticed is that all my apps quit MUCH faster now. I just quit all my Adobe apps so i could run the OSX security update, and what would have normally been a HD churning several minute marathon was done in a few seconds.

The moral is: GET MORE RAM.

Why is that?

Why did it help?

I think b/c the apps write SO much stuff to the HD which is inherently slower. With more RAM there is less need to use the HD so clearing out all the junk when quitting goes much faster.

I think that's right.

"...the RAM above 4 GB is used by the operating system as a cache for the Photoshop scratch disk data. Data that previously was written directly to the hard disk by Photoshop, is now cached in this high RAM before being written to the hard disk by the operating system."

...But PLEASE at least restart before installing OS updates, including security updates. Safe-booting is an even better option.

Great, you need 9GB of RAM for a MacPro to be snappy.

More like Adobe CS3 need 9GB (or more) to be snappy.
