High Definition Movies, without the Format War
. . .It says it is going to start introducing high definition movies, starting with 70 titles. Oddly, it is not disclosing which studios are participating, but from the list of available films (”Star Trek,” “Transformers,” “A Mighty Heart,” “The Bourne Ultimatum”) it appears that Paramount and Universal are involved.
New HD releases will cost $5.99 to rent, while older titles will rent for $3.99 – slightly higher prices than the standard definition titles on the Vudu service. . .

Set top boxes using download/rental models don't seem to work very well.
Disney's already failed trying to create a market for that. Several times.

I'm happy my Tivo works with Amazon's Unbox.
Of course, I'm mostly renting 99 cent movies.

What set-top boxes has Disney put out or endorse in the past? They have failed several times, yet I have never heard of them throwing their hat into that market (other than your normal PPV/On-Deman via Cable/Satellite...like any other company).

MovieBeam - Started by Disney - later sold to Movie Gallery (the movie rental company) and then subsequently shut down last month.

Well that didn't last long at all...no wonder I never heard of it. Was it even really marketed outside a certain scope?
