Remember when Apple's lineup was a 2x2 Matrix? - space-time - 01-16-2008

Steve showed the matrix sometime in 1999 or 2000, a 2x2 matrix

Top: Consumer: iBook and Imac
Bottom-Pro: PowerBook and PowerMac

Then he introduced the Cube into the bottom line.

Now there is no Matrix. MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBookPro, iMac, MacPro, MacMini, iPods, iPhones, TV and what not.

I think it 2-3 years we're gonna see a matrix again. This cannot go on forever. What goes around, comes around.

Why should Apple be stuck with 1999 thinking? Apple's current product mix is nowhere near the muddle of Performas and low-end PowerMacs that the 2x2 matrix was designed to eliminate.

Nah, that was back when there were a billion Performa models, all with the same specs. Even with all the new products Apple has now none of them really overlap. Each has it's own niche, some bigger than others. Also Apple's identity and high public esteem is much greater than what it was in '98.

I did not see the new matrix we're gonna see someday it is 2x2. It could very well be 3x3x3. but we shall see a new matrix

The matrix is there, and it is a 3x3 matrix. It's no longer differentiated between consumer and pro lines, but differentiated between desktop, laptop, consumer electronics:

desktop: Mac mini, iMac, Mac Pro
laptop: Macbook, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro
consumer electronics: iPod, iPhone, AppleTV

Nope; I think more choice is a good thing. I'm still thinking Apple will foray into the tablet market at some point. I'd also like to see a "toughbook" style MacBook (have a few clients who are in construction type jobs and love their Toughbooks, which I think are made by Panasonic).

And ditto on what Sam3 said; the matrix is indeed down to 3x3. I just wish they'd pin down a regular release schedule; i.e., consumer Macs (iMac, MacBook, Mac mini) during the summer (just before school begins), consumer electronics (iPod, AppleTV, iPhone) in the fall just before Christmas shopping season, pro-oriented stuff (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air) in the spring.
