New Restrictions for Checked Baggage - Harbourmaster - 01-16-2008 New Restrictions for Checked Baggage As of January 1, 2008, airline passengers are no longer be able to pack loose lithium batteries in checked luggage. Why? Because lithium batteries have the potential to overheat and ignite and are therefore considered hazardous materials. The new rule is designed to reduce the risk of fire. Only those lithium batteries already installed in electronic devices will be allowed in checked baggage. Passengers can bring lithium batteries on board in carry-on baggage only if they are stored in the original container or in a plastic bag. Re: New Restrictions for Checked Baggage - M A V I C - 01-16-2008 Not exactly. It depends on how much lithium is in them. http://techreport.com/discussions.x/13860 http://safetravel.dot.gov/whats_new_batteries.html Re: New Restrictions for Checked Baggage - Don Kiyoti - 01-16-2008 That'll teach them lithium-wielding terrorists! I feel so much safer now. Re: New Restrictions for Checked Baggage - Racer X - 01-16-2008 what about lithium pills for bi-polar passengers? I think this new reg is in response to last years exploding battery extravaganza. I guess the real solution is to just get an OLPC crank powered computer. That should bring back fun in the Board Room. I'm not sure I would pull one of those out and start winding away on a flight. Re: New Restrictions for Checked Baggage - OWC Jamie - 01-16-2008 There's been DOT regs concerning lithium batteries for years. They raised the number of grams for concern and tagged shipping a few years back. You can't put over a certain amount of grams in the hold of the plane, makes sense they shouldn't be in the passenger compartment either. |
