Ack pinched nerve, what do you do? - beerman - 01-18-2008

I got a short massage earlier tonight that helped me quite a bit. I can now turn my head and tilt it back. Much better. But the middle of my back, between my shoulder blades, feels terrible. If I turn wrong it shoots into my shoulder and down my left arm. I'm trying to arrange for a professional massage for saturday but in the meantime, what else can I do?

Chiropractor.

Stand in a hot shower.

Relax.

Take a deep (steamy) breath and relax more. Feet planted firmly, about a shoulder's width apart..

Drop your hands to your sides.

Now roll your shoulders. 10 times forwards and 10 times backwards.

Relax and let hot water run down your back.

Repeat if you wish.

Just recovering from that situation in October. Had the same severe shoulder pain and down the arm. Got acute from carrying a book bag breifcase with my 12" MacBook in it for 3 days at a trade show over ONE shoulder and seriously irritated the nerve. I went to an orthopedic doctor (sports medicine too) and we tried physical therapy and Celebrex for several weeks. The pain made me insane and the Vicodin made it all but impossible to really get anything done workwise. Back to the doctor for an MRI (nice JPEGs) and the pain finally backed off after two (2 weeks apart) epidural cortisone injections between vertebrae C5 and C6. Lots of stretching, corrective exercise (physical therapy) and analyzing my work station helped a lot (arms were too high reaching up to the desk top, too much tight mousing and the occasional phone tucked under one ear didnt help neck position).

The MRI looked bad and I found I have a herniated disc, so chances are that without care, it can all return with a vengeance.

Now interestingly enough, I would say my friends and associates recommended chiropractic 5 to 1. But i was so tight the thought of a wrenching adjustment scared me. The pain had been kidney stone level. And the orthopedic doctor is a personal friend and I figured he would give me the scoop.

BTW, I'm 53 and in good health and did work out regularly, which I hope to resume in a few weeks.

If you go with a chiro, seek out one who is also an MD, but i would go with the MD.

When I had a pinched nerve, I found that regular applications of heating pads helped tremendously, reducing pain and increasing flexibility.

They sell many kinds of heating pads at drug stores these days. I ultimately settled on a combination of microwavable heating pad for evenings around the house and disposable sticky heating pads for day/work.

They make sticky heating pads in a variety of sizes and shapes for applying to different parts of the body.

call in sick

Sounds like an acutely herniated disc.
Stay away from chiropractors. See a doc and figure out what sort of anti-inflammatory meds might work for you. An MRI may be indicated, If Massage helps, continue, but make sure the massage therapist knows they're just mopping up the (ongoing) symptoms of something more serious.

Well...

I assume you have tried the usual treatments (ointments, patches, heating pads..et al).
I have to go with the MD reccomendation. I had back pains and chiropractors could make the pain less but never go away. Doc did an MRI and sent me to sports medicine for a couple of weeks (deep infra red and sonic massage followed by range of motion). After 2 weeks it had almost completley subsided.

Good Luck...it's amazing how something small can make your day hell...
