OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - deckeda - 01-27-2008 My auction didn't list any other country options besides the U.S and yet somebody from France became the high bidder without asking me ahead of time if I'd consider shipping outside the U.S. I'm a little annoyed about it; maybe I shouldn't be. Isn't that grounds for refusing it? Or is it not a big deal to ship overseas? Please advise. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - Zoidberg - 01-27-2008 Can you refuse? Well, if you didn't expressly say something like INTERNATIONAL BIDS: Sorry, absolutely no international bids; I will only ship to U.S. addresses then you're not on the "high ground" as it were. FWIW, I've had good relationships in the past with regular bidders who are overseas (say, New Zealand) who have a friend/relative in the US who receives the stuff they buy and then ships it en masse. But, yeah, I sold a hard drive to a guy in France ages ago, and it took forever (lots of arcane and outdated paperwork) and cost a bundle (all on his dime) to ship it there. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - deckeda - 01-27-2008 I always considered the notices such as you mention to be a strong heads-up to the clueless, but that whatever the auction stated in the "Ships To:" area to hold sway. After all, what's it there for? Merely a suggestion? I'll do some more poking around eBay's site. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - voodoopenguin - 01-27-2008 Probably because I am in the UK I have no problems shipping to France and often have done. I also ship very often to Australia and New Zealand (they like their model railway over there) as well as the rest of the world and that includes the USA on a lot of occasions, South America, Japan, Siberia (twice!) and various places around Africa. As long as the basics are correct then there is no problem shipping anywhere these days. It is a small world. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - deckeda - 01-27-2008 Yeah, I guess I'm in this then. eBay has a special place for your selling preferences to block various types of bidders, which of course I didn't setup. So the "Ships to:" really is merely a suggestion. And therefore, pointless. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - voodoopenguin - 01-27-2008 One thing to consider if you are being paid via PayPal. According to eBay rules you are not supposed to charge extra to specifically cover their charges. This I work with however if the transaction involves two currencies (Euros and dollars in your case) then you get charged an extra fee on top of the usual and I have no qualms in adding a bit more to the international shipping charge I state to cover it. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - mstudio - 01-27-2008 I don't know what your item is, so don't know the difficulty of shipping. I've sent many items overseas and never had a problem. If the buyer is willing to pay all costs, there should not be a problem. I just shipped a light meter to Paris, shipping was $25, they got it in 4 days and were quite happy. Good luck. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - macnut - 01-27-2008 If he has a decent eBay record, there should be no problem. We don't sell to first time buyers overseas. The big problem is likely to be customs duties. Make sure he understands that he is responsible for them, and they could increased the cost significantly. He should check from his side on this. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - Janit - 01-27-2008 One of the main issues for you is your protection under the PayPal Buyers/Sellers Protection policies, which are not in your favor for most international shipments. To protect yourself from potential fraud, I recommend requiring insurance for international shipments, since most international shipments do not involve "confirmed" addresses. You can also chose to offer him only one of the faster, more expensive, tracked shipping options, and maybe he will decide to ask to cancel the sale. Re: OK, a bidder from France just "won" my eBay auction. Now what? - deckeda - 01-27-2008 Yes I'll insure it and track it. It's an SLR lens I can't afford to lose. I went to both usps.com and ups.com. Neither are as intuitive as they should be --- UPS in particular is a friggin' mess for just trying to get a quote. And it seems I may need his phone number? I have a Post Office near me at work. I'll take what I have and ask how much. |
