Bizarre Toast Issue: Ever seen this? - steveroberts - 01-27-2008

Friends,

I opened some audio (MP4 and MP3) for editing in Amadeus (and also in Audacity). I saved the edited file as AIF (and also .WAV and MP3).

When I dragged the files into the Toast (7.1.3) audio CD window, the files played back very distorted. Burning these files to disc through Toast creates a distorted disc.

When listening to the files from the desktop, or when importing and playing them through iTunes, there is no distortion.

When dragging the files to Music DVD window in Toast, the files also play back without any distortion.

For testing purposes, I dragged some older audio files into the Toast Audio CD window -- some do and some do not have distorted playback.

Can't figure this one out, but I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have.

SR

P.S. PM me. If you'd like, I'd be happy to send a small file out for a test on your system

Even stranger: I burned the files from iTunes onto a CD, then dragged the files from the CD into the Toast Audio CD window.

The burned files have no distortion, but the original file, when dragged from the desktop to the Toast Audio CD window is still distorted...

Try the usual suspects... remove all 3rd party components (DivX, LAME, mp3, Ogg, Perian, etc.) from the ~/Library/QuickTime and Library/QuickTime folders, log out and in again and see if the problem remains.

Thanks for the tip. I tried this as you suggested, but the problem persists...

Based on my own experiences, Toast was a lot more stable at 7.0.2. I've encountered all sorts of video encoding glitches since that version, getting even worse in v8 and above. I wouldn't be surprised if there were audio encoding problems, too.

If I were having that trouble, I'd probably try running 7.0.2. I suspect that it would work just fine.

Good suggestion, MM. Thanks.

But, where can I find that version? The Roxio web site has only the 7.1.3 update.

Hmm... I didn't notice that they'd taken those old updates offline.

Sorry.

Well, you could still try Toast 7 from your original install disc.

Ok, I reinstalled Toast and also found the various updates.

Strangely, the problem persists with the older versions I tried.

Any other thoughts on this?

Thanks.

The old updates are not offline, they are just difficult to find. Go through the process of getting the latest update, and then instead of clicking on the file change the last couple of numbers in the url. Sooner or later you will find the file you are looking for.
