Reunion seems to be the only option for the Mac that is any good. Family Tree Maker is a good one for the PC.

Great, FREE, ONLINE, Platform Agnostic Geneology tool called GENI!

My son started a family tree on Geni 3 months ago as a school project related to American History, specifically imagration into the USA.

He started out with the 5 memebers of his imediate family and now, three months later our "Family Tree" has over 220 people listed with family members in the USA, Asia, Russia and throughout Europe!

Very exciting as people add there extended family members with pictures and such!

Really a neat thing for FREE!

Reunion is gold standard but take a look at MacFamilyTree, it's got some interesting features.

Personal Ancestral File from the LDS Church is free, although Windows only.

I still prefer Reunion over other Mac software I've tested out, but it's not free.

The LDS church also has some good online resources at FamilySearch.org

Most of the better genealogy programs have an export as 'GEDCOM' file which is a pretty standard exchange format for genealogy files (the important fields will transfer).

So you can export the file in Reunion (Mac) and import it in Family Tree Maker (PC). The good thing is you can export only a portion of your tree for a cousin that is only working on part of the line you are working on (ie, his ancestors on his mother's side may be different than yours).

I run Reunion 8 and it is really good at handling a lot of complicated situations. I really need to upgrade to 9 but haven't yet.
