Just talked to my local Sacramento AppleStore-They have both Time Capsules in Stock.
Best Buy nearby expects them today. If your local best Buy gets them you can use this 10% off coupon today only (might get a new coupon for next month-not sure)

Best Buy Apple Rep said the coupon should work since the only exclusions that might apply are No Computers, and no iPods.

Now we will find out if by solving Wireless Time Machine, they will finally get it working on Airport Extremes like Leopard originally promised. I am betting that is why there was such a delay on Time Capsule.

Are you suggesting there'll be a "silent upgrade", so to speak? I thought it had already been established that Airport Extremes aren't expected so support Time Machine wirelessly. That's my understanding. Unless you have reason to believe that Apple has an unexpected announcement in store (based on something more substantial than the observation that there's been "such a delay" on Time Capsule, which could be for plenty of other reasons) Time Capsule supports Time Machine wirelessly and Airport Extreme does not. Did Leopard promise this? Overtly, in print somewhere? Do you know something we don't? Or is this wishful thinking...

It was promised as one of the major features to Leopard's Time Machine with the AEX.

I might take advantage of the deal, I've been trying to decide whether to get a Capsule or an Extreme.
What I think the issue could be with Airport Extreme and Time Machine--even in optimal conditions---a USB-attached external drive connected to an Airport Extreme, for Time Machine's purposes--backups at regular intervals, wirelessly---it would be unbearably slow. It might not function in a satisfying enough way to be useful to Time Machine users.
The speed tests I've seen with a USB drive (not the fastest connection to begin with) attached to an Airport Extreme aren't very fast, even on a wired connection. On a wireless one, even at 802.11n fast connection, it's possible that it won't have the performance necessary to be useful for Time Machine's wireless backups. As it is, you can use Time Machine on a wired connection, no? If not, I agree, Apple should at least enable the newer, Gigabit Airport Extreme models so wired users can use Time Machine for backups, without having to buy a Time Capsule.
Time Capsule's Internal drive is significantly faster than a USB-attached drive. It won't be screaming fast, either, over WiFi, but it'll have acceptable performance for Time Machine's regular backups.

(at least according to GIzmodo's early review)

Time machine only does hourly incremental backups after the first one---unless you make major changes--not much data needs backing up

I plan to get a 500 GB Time Capsule, hopefully this weekend (might as well, need a new base station anyway, to replace my Airport Express) and will attach a USB drive to it. (a FW/USB drive, though I'll hate having to give up its preferred FW connection, I wouldn't buy a USB-only drive if my life depended on it) My network is both wired and wireless. I expect it to be dog slow when accessing the USB connected drive wirelessly, from my MacBook Pro. But it would be fun to have a lot of storage available on the network, to try different things with.
Time Machine, I haven't decided if or how I would use it yet. I'm still new in Leopard (just installed it on most of my machines today) like most folks here, I already have a backup routine, but I'm still curious enough about Time Machine to give it a try.
