Is there a doctor in the house? looks like a blister on lower eyelid - MacArtist - 03-01-2008

My 5 year old isn't feeling well today. Sore throat, temp of 101. Gave her Children's Tylenol according to age/weight. She has been sleeping and now it looks like her lower eyelid is swollen. Looks like a blister in appearance.

Anybody gone through this before?

I know; I know. Go to the doctor. Saturday...in a small Iowa town? It's going to be a drive to the emergency room.

Sounds like a sty http://www.medicinenet.com/sty/article.htm

We used to get them as kids - non life threatening

That's what I thought of but she isn't complaining that her eye hurts. No watering. No real redness around the area. Just kind of puffed out.

Sty's don't always hurt much, or cause watering. Warm compresses may help some, but basically you ride them out.

Hope she feels better. Not much worse than a sick kid.

Post a picture of the eye. However, with fever, sore throat, and a puffy eye, I wouldn't call it a sty necessarily. The differential diagnosis is large...Kawaski's disease, preseptal cellulitis, drug (allergic reaction), conjuctivitis, and a plain old viral syndrome have to be amongst the differentials. It's hard to make a diagnosis over the web. Your best bet is to get to a qualified physician and get this checked out.

Just wondering... if this could be one of the ways we will be getting medical advice under a more socialized medical system - having to post online (at Mac forums!) for help. Our system definitely needs a major overhaul for sure... but I hope we can do better than UK and Canada. Japan's system works great.

Anyway, (sorry to have hijacked your post!) hope she gets better soon! And, I am glad we can get at least some help on these forums for ALL kinds of things, especially a child's illness.

I googled first (if that is any better) before I posted here.

She seems to be feeling better. The only drug reaction would have been to acetaminophen. Gawd, I hope not. I am allergic to everything except glass, plastic and styrofoam but I can take Tylenol.

When I first posted this; it looked like a raised bump. That looks like it has gone some but I wonder if she has a plugged tear duct or something.

Her temp is normal now but I want to see if it's broken or if it will come back after the Tylenol wears off.

In 1999 our oldest had Scarlet Fever. You could tell by looking at her that something was wrong but she didn't fuss a bit. We took her to the emergency room and the doctor thanked us for bringing her in. She said it is fairly rare and she hadn't dealt with a case of it before. She was actually smiling while she was telling us this. Glad we made her day.

I wake that way when the cats have been around or I go more than 3 days without pillow washing and linen change. For me it's dust mites - gets more sensitive every year, and started back around her age!

Looks like water under my eyes, but a few drops of Opcon-A (or new Alaway by B&Lomb)
plus 30 minutes standing does trick.

Yeah, I am wondering because I put a warm washcloth over her eyes a couple hours ago and the swelling is almost gone.

She still has a nasty cold though.

Going to have to keep an eye on her.

The warm compresses are almost always a good idea for external eye problems. I'm sorry your little one is feeling under the weather. I hope she is better soon.
