Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - lafinfil - 05-03-2008 Hi all Many have expressed an interest in a charity donation of some kind in memory of our friend Minty There have been several suggestions so far including a charity that takes underprivileged kids to Cubs games or a organization that takes care of stray animals. Alpha Dog mentioned that a sanctuary for them was a dream that Mint had, that sadly won't be realized. dmann has offered to take care of the finances, as she did with the donations when Lope passed away. In order to keep the other thread separate from this discussion I have cut and pasted dmanns post Please post thoughts or suggestions about donations or organizations here - i'll sticky it temporarily. Sorry for the anti-sticky crowd but I think this time it's warranted We will probably leave both stickies up through the weekend as it seems that many people are still posting. Thanks >>>> Start Message from dmann Re: One of our own is gone Posted by: dmann [Ignore] Date: May 03, 2008 09:45AM Thanks to all of you who have emailed me and/or expressed an interest in contributing to a memorial fund. A couple quick things: 1. Great minds think alike and most of the suggestions have been for Chicago Cubs Charities or an animal rescue fund. Both are great ideas and I don't see why we can't do both. I'll just split the amount collected. 2. AlphaDog was going to touch base with 'Minty's family for their input 3. I have already spoken with PayPal and they have "authorized" my account for this task. They even sent me a link that I can send to you when we are ready to launch this thing. 4. If you are PayPal adverse, you can definitely send me a check. I promise to forget your name and address as soon I as I get it as long as you promise to do the same. There were no problems at all when we did this for The Lope, so I don't anticipate any now. Hopefully I can call on the powers that be here to post a new sticky once the details are decided. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - dmann - 05-03-2008 Thanks 'fil. ![]() More: If we decide to split the $$ among two organizations, it will go like this: All $$ collected via PayPal will be split evenly among the two groups If you send me a check, I ask that you make it payable to whichever of the organizations you choose. If you want to send two checks, one for each group, great. Once all is said and done, I'll write two checks from the PayPal collection and will forward them, along with all the other checks collected to the specified groups. Except for me and the donor, no one else will know how much any one person contributed, but I will keep everyone updated with totals as they accumulate. ANY amount is welcomed. Times are tough right now and while I know the good people of this forum want to help, practical matters are and should be the priority. A bunch of really little amounts gather into something substantial very quickly, so don't hesitate to throw $1, $2 or $5 my way! Were that I could I'd think he might not think it a bad idea to send a check to your local Little League or other baseball organization for kids under 15. Many of these are under funded an in fact could use the help. More to the point. Call your local and ask them what it takes (usually $130 or so) to sponsor a kid who otherwise couldn't afford to play. Do something meaningful and dedicate your good deed to Minty. Let his family know you did this. If you have a shortage of kids in your area needing this PM me, I have more kids than their folks have money! ![]() Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - lafinfil - 05-03-2008 moved >>>> Re: One of our own is gone Posted by: mikebw [Ignore] Date: May 03, 2008 10:26AM I'm in favor of funding trips to a Cubs game, for some disadvantaged group. I've been a youth coach for far too long to think spectating is a good thing. If you had $100,000, would you buy tickets so kids could watch a game or find a way they could play the game? Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - OWC Jamie - 05-03-2008 [quote RgrF] If you had $100,000, would you by tickets so kids could watch a game or find a way they could play the game? Can we go to Fenway rather than Wrigley ? Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - dmann - 05-03-2008 Look, the idea here is to honor someone who touched our lives. Do whatever feels right and feel good about that, no matter what it is. For those who wish to be part of the collective, great. For those who wish to honor Spearmint's memory in other or more private ways, great. Either way, let's not battle about which way is "right", because that definitely doesn't do justice to any of us, especially 'Minty. DM |
