People are saying Iron Man looks great digitally. Hey, I'm game. How do I find one of those?

I saw The Simpsons Movie at a digital screen last year and it was great. I am so tired of paying $8 or more for a movie just to have stupid registration marks pop across the screen, and to have the whole image jump around. Digital doesn't seem to have any problems like that.

IMAX isn't necessarily digital, and depending on where you live, there may not be many, if any, digital projection theaters near you. It's a huge expense for theater owners to switch to digital and not much incentive to do so.

Last I read was that some IMAX theaters would go digital "mid 2008".

Gareth --- big money is saved by not having to print and distribute film stock.

As a geek, there's one aspect to this I don't welcome. IMAX has a kind of unique marketing tool available to it in the form of theaters that "present" the projection booth in glass walls. If you've ever seen those big, horizontal platters going it's kind of neat, and more interesting than watching a hard disk ...

My local IMAX theater shows digital movies now and then.

When The Incredibles (?) was showing, there was a notice that said this was not a movie produced for IMAX, but that it was being shown in digital on an IMAX screen.

Regardless, I love the immersion provided by that screen.

Yes, it is, but that's money saved by the studios/distributors, NOT the theater owners, and the problem is that the studios don't seem to want to share that savings with the theater owners, thus providing no incentive for theater owners to invest in digital projection.

The link I posted is only for theaters that have DLP digital projectors, which is the most widely used right now. IMAX is a different technology. Go to IMAX.com for a list of IMAX theaters. Sony also is pushing it's digital projectors which use a 4K system, also not included in that link.
