OT: HP1200 Laser Jet Printer -- Fatal Error - SKYLANE - 05-05-2008

I have a 1200 Laser Jet that has been giving me good service for quite some time. The light sequence on front is coming up with "Fatal Error". Unplugging for extending period of time does not correct the situation -- powers up and immediately displays the "Fatal Error" light sequence.

I am trying to decide if it is worth sending the 1200 for repair. I picked up the 1200 for free from my sister after her husband was done using it for a thesis in school. I will be calling HP to see what cost impacts are for repair attempt.

I have a Canon iP4000 which I use for Color printing. It was nice having the 1200 for high volume stuff which I did often. (I was using it to print residential listings on a relatively frequent basis).

Questions:

(1) Anyone have the "Fatal Error" code come up on 1200? Probably not worth repairing a 1200(?). Probably could put the repair money towards a new printer.

(2) What hardware replacement options should be at top of my list based on your experience (reasonably priced) for doing high volume stuff?

Press and hold the Go button for the secondary light pattern. PM your email address and I'll send the appropriate pages from the service manual.

I just had the same problem with my LJ1012. I decided to just order a new brother for $121 from Newegg. I forget the model, but it has Wireless and ethernet built in, plus it came with an extra high capacity toner cartridge. I would have spent $50 or so on a new toner cart for the hp, so this seemed like a good deal.

Just my .02.

If you recall the model of your Brother, let me know. I'll check it out.

Its the 2170W. Here's the Newegg linky: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113291

If you scroll down a bit, you'll see the combo for $121.99. Its $99 without the extra cartridge, but for $21, its a steal.

Hope this helps!

Answer to your questions....

When I press the lit green GO button, the light illuminating it goes out. However, the small amber and green light remain lit. Steady, no flashing.

When I let go of the GO button, it re-illuminates and the amber and green lights remain lit. All steady, no flashing.
