Can you copy a Pagemaker 6.5 file and paste it into an InDesign file from Adobe CS3? - Dennis S - 05-05-2008

A friend needs to transfer his work from Pagemaker 6.5 in OS9 to the latest InDesign from CS3. I think he will want to do it on a dual-boot G4 in 10.4 Does anyone know if it will or won't work?

ID should open those files, but maybe not perfectly

Convert, not paste into, presumably?

Whatever it takes to merge from OS 9 to 10.5 and never have to run Classic and have all his old catalogs and artwork updated to Adobe CS3. Pasting would be fine, if that's what it takes.

I don't have CS3, but CS2 converts my PM documents pretty well. I can't imagine circumstances in which the "paste" route would ever be preferable.

There will be plenty of things to fix and lots to learn.

The "paste route" would be Plan B if the conversion didn't work.

Maybe print to PDF and then import the PDF into ID...

I don't know whether it's the case for everyone or just me, but IME as of ID CS2 only PM7 documents open in the app, not PM6.

Also, if he hasn't gotten PM to run in Classic yet, be ready for trouble... As of Tiger's Classic, PM no longer runs on my Mac. It gives missing resource errors on startup even after I tried all of the old missing resource-file tricks.

I use CS2 to open PM 6 and 6.5 docs. I have no PM 7 docs. I also have ID CS and ID 2 installed on various drives, which also do an OK job on PM files. To work with older files, something I had to do occasionally some years ago, I first converted them to PM 6.5 docs.
