Happy Birthday iMac - GGD - 05-06-2008

10 years ago today the iMac was announced although it didn't ship until August.

What are some of the things that you remember from that day? Here's some of mine.

What the heck is Bondi? Did my big box of 64 Crayola's have a Bondi crayon?

No Floppy, that could be bad.

233 MHz G3 with 512MB L2 for $1299, pretty good bang for the buck.

100 Megabit Ethernet, that's really nice.

What's with that mouse?

Oh, no--no SCSI.

USB? I thought only PC's had USB. Nobody uses those ports anyway. Is anybody really going to make USB peripherals just for Macs?

The major negative news from the press was the lack of a floppy drive.

Steve could read the writing on the wall for the floppy disc. It was going the way of the dodo bird.

We bought our daughter the original bondi blue model. She was 2 1/2 years old. She took to it like a bee to honey. I think we spent a small fortune in learning CDs for her but she is getting straight A's in school (currently finishing up 6th grade) and I like to think that her iMac played a part in that.

Great computer. The old Bondi still works perfectly although it has been taken out of regular service.

I have one that still works - it's spending it's days on a shelf in the back room. That made a great little web server, after it was done as an everyday workstation. Not being used now. Sad.

I'm going to go back there right now and give it a big hug!

My RevB Bondi ( Jan '98 ) is still cranking away, with a 466 G3 NewerTech processor upgrade and maxed memory ( 512MB ) and a 30GB whitelabel drive. Runs MacOS X 10.3.9 just fine ( if a tad slowly ).

Still lusting after a trayloader combo drive and G4 upgrade for it; video display would be massively improved.
