Need help with xls files - kap - 05-06-2008 I have an Excel 03 file containing thousands of records in various years; I only need the records from 2007 through 2008 to export into Access 03. I am trying to C&P the data but instead I keep either accidentally relocating or breaking up the data ![]() I am at work using a MicroPC desktop running Windows XP Pro. TiA UPDATE: Never mind! I figured it out ... Shift+Highlight-Drag ![]() Re: Need help with xls files - N-OS X-tasy! - 05-06-2008 - Select all columns - Selete Data > Filter > AutoFilter. - Use a custom filter to show data only for years 2007 and 2008 (this assumes there is a Year column) - Copy and paste filtered data Re: Need help with xls files - kap - 05-06-2008 [quote N-OS X-tasy!]- Select all columns - Selete Data > Filter > AutoFilter. - Use a custom filter to show data only for years 2007 and 2008 (this assumes there is a Year column) - Copy and paste filtered data Your method is more efficient ![]() Re: Need help with xls files - N-OS X-tasy! - 05-06-2008 It amazes me how little folks sometimes know about the tools they use. A few years back I worked with a woman for whom the term "computer illiterate" was seemingly coined. She could barely turn the damn thing on! Imagine my amazement when, one day while passing her cubicle, I glanced over her shoulder and found her putting the finishing touches on a huge column of numbers in Excel. Boy, was I impressed! I was curious to see whether she had learned enough to know about the easy method (the Sum button) or if she was going to kick it old school by manually typing the Sum formula at the base of the column. She did neither. Instead, she busted out a hand calculator AND PROCEEDED TO USE IT TO ADD THE NUMBERS. When she had her sum, she dutifully typed it in at the bottom of the column. I was barely able to hold the laughter long enough to vacate the vicinity. One of the best laughs I ever had. Re: Need help with xls files - kap - 05-07-2008 Hey, my high school chem's instructor made us use slide rule while other instructors allowed their students to use calculators. Re: Need help with xls files - N-OS X-tasy! - 05-07-2008 My college ME professor made us build a slide rule. Re: Need help with xls files - kap - 05-07-2008 Oh, yeah? I had to pay for that slide rule with my high school student's penny-stricken budget ![]() Re: Need help with xls files - PeteJ - 05-07-2008 Well, we had to build a slide rule, too...out of popsicle sticks! Re: Need help with xls files - cbelt3 - 05-07-2008 .. and walk five miles in knee deep snow to school, BOTH WAYS ! I had to memorize the log tables to do the work in my head. Once scientific calculators came out, I retained some of that knowledge for a time. It's gone now. Re: Need help with xls files - Don C - 05-07-2008 Shortly after putting computer labs in our schools we developed a Computer Applications Test" which tested kids abilities to use word processing, data bases, spreadsheets, and keyboarding. I was interested in the number of students who added numbers in the workbook and typed them into the spreadsheet. Rather like N-OS X-tasy! 's story. Back then, many of the tests used Appleworks. |
