What happens when 50 pounds of silly putty hits the ground? - freeradical - 05-07-2008

The video takes a little while to load, but it's kind of interesting. The silly putty shatters when it hits the ground.

Oh those bored geeks...

bad experiment. it should have been machine rolled under pressure.

[quote Jimmypoo]bad experiment. it should have been machine rolled under pressure. I don't know anything about the pressure, but temperature and height of the drop has a lot to do with the breakage.
If I remember my "Silly Putty" science correctly, it stretches if you pull it slowly, and breaks if you pull it quickly.
Maybe a lower floor?

Silly putty is kind of like a non-newtonian fluid, the more force is applied to it the putty will become more like a solid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-Newtonian_fluid

You can make pools of the stuff and run across without falling in:

So it makes a great toy and a youtube video, but does Silly Putty have a practical application?
