Poll: MacPro ram/drives - d0e - 05-07-2008
MacPro owners what type of ram did you get, 1gig,2gig,4gig (size/brand/price). Did you keep the stock drive as boot or replace with bigger drives. Kicking around how much ram i need to order, as of right now i am thinking 2gig sticks as much as i can swing.

from all that i have read, you need at least 8 to see a difference
so 2 gigs total in the macpro after your upgrade? (my imac has got 4 gigs)
as for drives, best startup and primary drive is the WD 640 gig drive
bang for buck is a samsung spinpoint 750 gig drive (regardless that someone had one fail)

I have a stock original 2.66. I added 2GB RAM for a total of 3 (2x1GB and 2x512GB).
I removed the original HD with 4 500GB drives. 2 are set up as a s/w RAID 0 the other two are independent and serve as a scratch disk and MP3 storage, respectively. The RAID 0 is my boot drive, though I rarely ever reboot (does any Mac user?).
3GB gets me by. 4GB would be better I think but hard to justify when I need other things.

I have 12GB in my Mac Pro (4x2GB + 4x1GB). I'd recommend 6 GB minimum. After my latest upgrade, I've got 4x1GB spare.
HD space, 1x400GB and 3x500GB

Here's what I have in my MacPro 2.66
13 GB of RAM (12 gigs from OWC). At $145 for 2x2gb; it's a no brainer.
I have a 640 WD that was intended for my boot drive until my new Samsung Spinpoint 750 bit the dust. For now; I have all my graphic files on the WD.
I also have a Seagate 500 GB 7200.10 Hard drive for back ups and a WD 500 GB with XP Pro loaded on it in Parallels (just in case I need an extra machine that can run Windows).
An ATI x1900 v.2 is thrown in for good measure. I occasionally fire up a game to unwind.

My original setup was really weird because it was a replacement for a G5 and Apple tried to match the config of the G5 as closely as they could. So it shipped with a 160GB hard drive (Apple dillrods) which has been sitting in a closet since about the second day I had it. It also shipped with 2GB RAM in the form of 4x512MB. I immediately added another 2x1GB back when it was really expensive and ran with that 4GB until recently when I added another 2x2GB.
Honestly, I don't notice any difference between 4GB and 8GB. And sometimes, Activity Monitor shows I have 6GB free.

I added 2 x 1GB & 2 x 2GB. Didn't notice a huge difference between 2GB & 4GB, in my limited testing. Noticed a big difference between 4GB & 8GB. Bought 2 x 2GB locally. Bought 2 x 1GB from OWC.
Booting off one 1TB Seagate for now. Will add another drive in the future for the boot drive. Installed XP Pro on stock 320GB drive. Also added Seagate 500GB drive.

QuadCore 3GHz 2007 model.
16GB RAM Data Memory (DMS)
6X1TB HDD's using a MaxConnect bracket by MaxUpgrades, puts two HDD's in the empty optical bay. Utilizes the two SATA ports on the motherboard.
jdc is correct, my MacPro didn't wake up till I hit 8GB of RAM.
