Preferred SD Card Brands? - IronMac - 05-07-2008
Hi folks...just curious as to which brand of SD cards do you all recommend? For a Canon digital camera. Thanks.

Dunno about recommended brands. I'd go for the least expensive. SD cards are getting cheaper all the time. I bought an ADATA 1 gig card for about $25 a few years back and they actually lived up to their warranty by replacing the card (the thing fell apart)...all it cost me was the USPS letter charge to return the thing.
All in all, I'd say make sure you get a fast enough card (usually 60x or faster is enough) and find the least expensive one. GL.

a PQI will not mount in my el-cheapo reader, but the Kingston does. The PQI caused me some trouble lately, I think it got corrupt. I would avoid PQI, YMMV

I've had great success with Transcend. Very inexpensive and good quality. Great reviews on Amazon. I currently have 3. 2 are 2gb and one is 8gb-no probs.

SanDisk. I have had problems with a couple of cheap off-brand ones (inability to recover photos - painful).

I had been happy with a 512MB standard speed Sandisk card in my Canon S3 IS. Recently at certain events I found it necessary to shoot so much that I'd have to stop and offload the files two or even three times.
So I looked at 2GB cards and finally decided to go the extra bucks and try Sandisk's Extreme III version. (SanDisk 2 GB SDSDX3-2048-901 Extreme III SD Memory Card, $29.49 with free shipping at Amazon.)
Holy cow, is that card quick! Where formerly I had to allow time between shots for the image to be written to the card, it's almost instantaneous now. It should be especially nice after shooting video. There were times when I'd miss some good opportunities while waiting for video to save; that won't be as likely now.
If you can spare the extra money, you might find it worth it.

I love the Sandisk ones with the built-in USB port.
It's great to pull the card from the camera and download images without a card reader or lead.
Cards are so cheap now, why risk your images to a potentially dodgy card?

most pros stick with SanDisk. I have 5 assorted SanDisk Extreme III/Ultra II CF cards, and 2 SD Ultra 2 cards.
