Ubuntu 8.04 x64 install - ztirffritz - 05-08-2008 I installed Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS x64 on my Dell Precision 390 Core2Duo today. I have 8GB of RAM. It took 6 minutes from power on to CD eject for a finished installation. Pretty impressive. Their servers are getting hammered though, so updates and patches are slow to be delivered. Re: Ubuntu 8.04 x64 install - microchip13 - 05-08-2008 It's funny that you bring this up. The linux consultant we've got for work recommended we try Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I've got to say, I'm extremely impressed. It's polished(well, as polished as the command line gets), lightweight, and with the long term support, simply killer. Re: Ubuntu 8.04 x64 install - ztirffritz - 05-08-2008 I had some REALLY serious issues at first, but they were holes that I dug for myself. I originally had Ubuntu 7.10 32bit installed on it. But it had 8GB of RAM, of which only 4 were visible to the OS. That is why I wanted to switch to 64bit version so I could use all of the RAM. I couldn't get it to install, then when I finally found a way to get it installed, it would become corrupted and choke. Finally I realized that while the RAM had been installed for almost 6 months, half of it had never been used or tested. I tested each stick individually. They all passed, but the testing required that they all be reseated. After that no problems, and it is FAST! Re: Ubuntu 8.04 x64 install - Jimmypoo - 05-08-2008 is it a VM yet? Re: Ubuntu 8.04 x64 install - ztirffritz - 05-08-2008 I don't know if there is a VM yet. Probably available somewhere. Most people don't run Linux as a VM. They run Windows as a VM inside of Linux. Just for you I did a little searching: Ubuntu 8.04 http://vmware.com/appliances/directory/1224 Just about anything else you could want: http://vmware.com/appliances/ Re: Ubuntu 8.04 x64 install - Jimmypoo - 05-08-2008 Bwahahahaha!
