Windows on a Mac - The UnDoug - 05-08-2008
Hi,
Anybody remember the name of the application that is supposed to allow you to run Windows apps on a Mac without using Bootcamp or Parallels or any other "emulator"? It was a sourceforge type of open source project, I believe.
Assuming you remember it, do you know if it works?

I occ use Bootcamp, though, so I can't provide any further info. I downloaded the lastest Beta but have not installed it.

It is hit or miss. It does not work for all Windows apps.
When it works, it works pretty well.
When it doesn't, it ... um... doesn't.

Darwine, Wine, Cross-over are code frameworks that will interpret Windows programs in another environment natively. They're hit or miss. Sometimes they work great, other times not at all.
VMWare, Parallels, Qemu, Virtualbox, are emulators that allow you to run a client OS inside of a host OS (eg Windows inside of OS X or Linux)

I only tried crossover on one application... some accounting program my sister wanted to try. They had an OS 9 version that they never updated for OS X. Instead, they went all PC. She really likes the program and has been keeping an old G3 iMac to run it on. She wanted to see if the latest PC version would work on her intel iMac, without having to buy a license for Windows. The application installer came up and installed it, but when it came time to run the program, it just hung up. So it didn't work for us.
