AMD jumps to 12-core chip, skips 8-core chip plans - Harbourmaster - 05-08-2008

The 12-core processor, code-named Magny-Cours, is due for release in the first half of 2010, according to AMD's updated road map

"Advanced Micro Devices plans to release processors with 12 cores, which changes its product road map and kills earlier plans to release 8-core chips.

The 12-core processor, code-named Magny-Cours, will be targeted at servers and is due for release in the first half of 2010, according to the company's updated road map announced Wednesday.

The chip will include 12MB of L3 cache and support DDR3 RAM, according to the road map.

AMD is jumping from a 6-core chip code-named Istanbul, due for release in the second half of 2009, straight to a 12-core chip the following year, an AMD spokesman said. "

this is great but the software developers have to rewrite their apps to take advantage of multicore processors.

Easier said than done...

But that has been true for several years now, multi-core x86 processors are not new, Apple's been shipping them for more than two years. The hard part is rewriting to go from one core to "more than one core", and usually when this is done consideration is given to the fact that over time the number of cores will be increasing, and the algorithms are written to take advantage of as many cores as are available, and a 12 core chip now really doesn't change the amount of development work needed from when there were just dual-core chips.

But what if there were 12 Apple cores instead of just 8?

Or two 12 cores????

Well apple has been selling refurbished machines with 2 x 8 core machinies for coming up on two weeks already, so this should be no surprise...

This is probably obvious to anyone who uses a computer regularly, but who the frack cares what AMD is doing in 2010? Tell me what your 2010 processors will be in oh, I don't know... 2010! Tongue
