it must be new because i swear i haven't seen exit numbers on the maps themselves before, at any magnification. yea, Googel! i've wanted them on directions for soooooo long!

Ooh- danger, will robinson. Exit numbers change, it's often better to have the exit name and linked highway. But I agree, it's cool.

actually, not all roadways use this system, especially in urban areas. though many are in the process of switching to mile markers, some are still using consecutive numbering.

i know, lafinfil. i do a lot of driving in the midwest and southeast. believe me, there are many areas that still use consecutive numbering. really messes with my travel time estimating head when the roads do that. i think my most recent encounter with this was the New York State Thruway (I90) when i was driving in the finger lakes region last month.

I've seen exit numbers on Google Maps before, but only in the areas that actually label their exits with them.

On US Interstate highways, I have only seen exit numbers that coincide with the mile markers. Never have never seen consecutive exit numbers.

Driven any old Interstates in the last 20 years ?
They're just taking down the last of the "formerly exit 2B" type signs around here. Where they've changed to the mile marker system.
Here's a Federal highway using the old marker system:

when driving in New England you have to keep in mind that some of the oldest roads started out as little more than footpaths for humans and thier 4 legged pack animals between villages and mills.
(up until 20 years ago when the road was realigned, the ruts from wagons were still visible in the woods in front of my house) [depressing to see the past destroyed by a bulldozer]
Edit: for anyone clicking on that link; Wikipedia claims the page does not exist. It does, and it is certainly not new. Type "Mass route 195" without the apostrophes into a google box and it is the second link in the results.

I-93 through New Hampshire still uses the sequential numbering system.
