what're the black ones with red/orange on the wings?

That's an amazing looking cactus (?)!

Great shots! Love looking at stuff like this and the ones posted earlier.

Makes me wanna get a serious telephoto lens (and a serious camera, for that matter).

OOOOH lovely photos!

Yes, I'm in Las Vegas to see Duran Duran (what else is new)? I'm waiting for my friend to finish getting ready and then we're off to the show.

As for the snakey, he's a gopher snake. I'd have to do a bit of googling to find out just what kind. What lovely markings on his head. Cute little fellow (or gal). Ok I seem to have a few more minutes to google. Here are the gopher snakes of Ca: http://www.humboldtherps.com/pituophis_2.html

Most likely he's a Pacific gopher snake: http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/snakes.html (scroll down to Pituophis)

Pituophis (pits, as we refer to them) are wonderful snakes. They're my favorites.

The black bird with the red wings is a Red-winged Black bird - duh! :-)
