High-pitched squeal in iBook G4 - katkramer - 05-12-2008

I had an iBook G4. Occasionally it would make a high-pitched squeal, which would fade away after a minute or so. It seemed to happen when the iBook got hot, and at first I noticed it when I was using it on my lap.

It *seemed* to be related to when the fan came on, but it could also be the hard drive. It went away when I closed the iBook.

Since I have a replacement hard drive, I thought I might tackle that repair first. The iBook is out of warranty.

Has anybody run across this problem?

Your front brake pads are probably low, and you've just hit the "squealers."

Have you been downloading big files - and then bringing your broadband to a screeching halt when the file is downloaded? That will wear the pads down in no time at all.

.

typo.
Don't try this at home.

Haha...I am familiar with these squealers!

Were you serious about the second part? B)

Does it go away when you unplug it and use battery power? If so probably the screen inverter. I had bum ones on a G4 PB and on a MBP. New inverter fixed the prob both times. The squeal is sooo annoying.

How does the power source have an effect on the inverter?

and no.... see above edit.

I remember that it didn't do it as much without power...
