WD Passport--3year warranty if you remove the HD? - anonymouse1 - 05-12-2008 Has anybody checked the serial number on the HD inside the WD Passport to see if you get the full 3 year warranty even if you pull the HD? Thanks! Re: WD Passport--3year warranty if you remove the HD? - Jimmypoo - 05-12-2008 That's an interesting question.... if they aren't tracking what/how they were used, that would be an incredible oversight. Re: WD Passport--3year warranty if you remove the HD? - hal - 05-12-2008 of course you won't, but those drives don't seem to have any tamper-resistant stickers or anything in place. If you are careful, you can open it, remove the drive and then replace it (if warranty work is needed) and no one would ever know. any time you look up the serial number of a drive that was pulled from an external case you would get a message to contact the OEM maker of the device that you got the drive from for warranty support. Re: WD Passport--3year warranty if you remove the HD? - Black Landlord - 05-12-2008 What did I miss-- why are people buying these to remove them from their cases? Can't you get a bare drive cheaper? And, when are we going to start seeing 2.5" drives larger than 320 GB? At the rate I'm going I'm going to have more hard drives than data CDs laying around. Re: WD Passport--3year warranty if you remove the HD? - RAMd®d - 05-12-2008 Surprisingly, there are a *lot* of external USB drive deals that are cheaper than a bare drive. I have no idea why. So far the only 2.5" drives larger than 320G are 12mm (or 12.5?) in height and won't fit an MB, but will fit a MBP. At the rate I'm going I'm going to have more hard drives than data CDs laying around. I'm there already, with 3.5" HDs. I'm going to get a Drobo and use 1T drives until it's full (3G protected). Only the 17" MBP. 15" MPB's still need a 9.5mm drive. And Samsung's 500GB 9.5mm drive has been released, but only in France so far, oddly enough. Re: WD Passport--3year warranty if you remove the HD? - blusubaru - 05-13-2008 Everyone's doing it. I bought a 250gb WD Passport from Dell.com back when they first came out and immediately ripped it open and supplanted it into my MacBook. The BMB's got a 320 so I'm good there for a few years. It's the new/old iMac with its 250 that's not going to work for more than a few weeks. . . Plus you can put the old one to work. Or eBay it. |
