24" iMac running extremely slow - jesse - 05-14-2008 I have a 24" iMac, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 1 GB of Ram that is running extremely slow. This is a problem that had been getting worse for some time, just checking my email would cause the spinning beach ball. So far I've tried erasing the hard drive and reinstalling OS 10.4, it ran for 2 day and finally gave up, I've run Disk Warrior 4 on it and It didn't have any problems reading the disk, it is set up in target mode connected to a 17" iMac, but when I told it to replace the directory it's pretty much just sitting there with the spinning beach ball. Is there something else I can try, I really don't want to try to replace the hard drive, but will if it comes down to that. Added: I had tried upping the ram to 4GB and there was no difference in performance. Thanks. Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - N-OS X-tasy! - 05-14-2008 Feed the hamsters? But seriously,... launch Activity Monitor and review resource usage on your system; you probably have one rogue process (maybe more) that is consuming an inordinate amount of CPU time/RAM. If nothing looks amiss in Activity Monitor, you may be looking at faulty hardware. Do you have an HP All-In-One printer? If so, the driver for it is the likely culprit. This piece of software is notorious for its ravenous appetite for system resources. Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - jesse - 05-14-2008 I had tried the activity monitor and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary other than Adobe CS3 apps using a lot of RAM, I had 2GB at the time and upped it to 4GB. No HP All-In-One, I did have an HP deskjet 9300 hooked up to it at one time and hadn't deleted it from the printer list after I'd disconnected it, but it was still running slow afterwards. Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - jdc - 05-14-2008 adding ram helps performance when you have a lot of applications open have you tried another user? Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - jesse - 05-14-2008 Hadn't tried another user, it's a good idea but too late now, I've reinstalled the system, though It wasn't able to completely install everything before it gave up, it was installing garageband loops from disk 2 when it finally quit. Can you please be specific about what you mean when you say something "gave up" or "finally quit"? Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - WHiiP - 05-14-2008 MORE RAM does not slow down this computer. You obviously have a problem and simply cannot find the issue. It sounds like your 1 GB of RAM has no chance since you mention multiple Adobe CS3 . . . Keep feeding us the info . . . WE might just get lucky with the interpretation of your verbage. ![]() Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - jesse - 05-15-2008 I was attempting to reinstall OS 10.4 from the original recovery disks that came with the computer, the installer ran for 2 days before quitting, at the time it quit it was installing garageband loops on disk 2. This computer originally was running with 2GB of ram, I added 2GB of ram for a total of 4GB, it made no difference. This was my work machine, I swapped it out with another 24" we had and transfered that 4 GB of ram to the my new work machine. The problem machine is now running with 1GB of ram, there are no apps on the machine other than what was installed prior to the installation quitting due to errors. Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - Black Landlord - 05-15-2008 Did you reformat the hard drive (i.e. write zeros) or just do a quick erase? Have you run disk utility on the hard drive? A 320 GB drive now costs not much more than $100- kind of sad to have a 24" iMac sitting around not being used. Re: 24" iMac running extremely slow - mstats - 05-15-2008 So the problem machine, now with 1GB of ram, is running but still very slow ? Is this machine a recently purchased refurb ? |
