checklist for replacing hard drives - roshi - 05-16-2008
It has been awhile since I replaced the internal hard drives in my G5 tower. I am trying to remember what the best-practices checklist is. Is it something like this:
1. Do a block-level clone from the working OS install to the new drive, which is in an external FW case.
2. Boot the Mac from the external drive, to test that everything is working.
3. Boot from the old drive, and "DE-authorize" the programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, Final Draft, and other such programs. De-authorize iTunes.
4. Install the new drive in the computer.
5. Re-authorize.

I may be mistaken, but I think iTunes is tied to the *computer* itself, rather than to the hard drive, installed OS, etc.
If that is true, than I don't think you need to deauthorize iTunes, though there's no harm in doing it.

you got DRM files? so what do you do if Apple is out of business? or even worse if they change the DRM scheme like MS did when they came up with Zune and older WMP files would not play? all my files are DRM free

Apple counts my external backup drive as one of my allowed computers to play iTunes.
