Having an issue with my local Craigslisters... - PeterB - 05-19-2008

... I've posted my spare hamsters up for adoption in the Community > Pets section, I keep getting flagged... even though I follow all the rules for posting.

Seems there are a bunch of anti-breeding haters there, who do not seem to understand the concept that there are responsible breeders and irresponsible breeders (for any species, not just these), and I'm in the former, not the latter, category... any suggestions?

Here in Tucson it says, "no pet sales or breeding please -- rehoming with small adoption fee OK." It would seem someone feels you're violating the rule against breeders. I'm sure you are quite responsible of course, but are you selling these hamsterlings or giving them away to good homes?

Re: Having an issue with my local Craigslisters... - PeterB - 05-19-2008

Yeah, that wording is problematic because it's ambiguous. I think what's intended is "no pet sales or breeding FOR PROFIT -- rehoming with small adoption fee OK." It's the latter that is what I am doing (e.g., rehoming with small adoption fee). I don't think the rule is meant to be against breeders... it's meant to be against breeders who are trying to profit from their breeding, which I clearly am not. I am not selling these guys... I am charging a $5 adoption fee since that's what's specified (small adoption fee). Trust me, I am NOT profiting by this... all the work and money spent on them, is far more than the $5 adoption fee I'm charging. (And mostly I'm charging the $5 fee just to make sure they get good homes, so that they don't become snake food ... sorry, Steph!)

"Spare" hamsters? Are those the ones you keep around in case the primary ones break or get a flat or something? :-)

Re: Having an issue with my local Craigslisters... - PeterB - 05-19-2008

N-OS, spare in the sense of what I would not ordinarily be keeping. If I don't adopt them out, I do keep them. I do sometimes keep more than what I really need for breeding... because I've had occasionally happen that I had an especially good litter, and if I only keep one male or one female from that litter, and it dies for whatever reason... then I have nothing left from that litter to work with.

Here's a response I got from CL a long time ago regarding 'giving away free' pet listing.

"...also prohibited are household pets of any kind including dogs, cats, primates, cage birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, or fish. Offering ANY non-livestock animal, including fish and snakes; for sale, trade, or free is PROHIBITED on CraigsList. Re-homing with small adoption fee OK" http://craigslist.org/about/prohibited.items.html

yep, clear as mud. You're probably getting flagged by the local PETA gang, or could be a bunch of PetSmart employees.

I guess I'm in the anti-breeder category, primarily where dogs and cats are concerned. Given the state of pet overpopulation and the numbers of excellent dogs and cats that are being killed for lack of homes, I don't know how anyone who is producing still more animals, whether for profit or as a hobby, can be considered responsible.

I don't really understand why you keep breeding the hamsters, given that you don't want all of offspring yourself.

Re: Having an issue with my local Craigslisters... - PeterB - 05-20-2008

ka jot, the problem with hamsters is that they only have a lifespan of 2-3 years, and are only fertile for less than a year. If you have a good line or lines (as I do), you will want to preserve it... that means breeding them. It's not like dogs or cats where the animals live 10-20 years.

It's true that there's a pet overpopulation problem generally, but... is that primarily due to breeders? I'd say no. In fact most breeders are responsible and do not do unnecessary crosses. (Though it's true, most are breeding for profit -- I am not doing that, obviously.) Most of the overpopulation problems (at least in dogs and cats) I think are due to irresponsible non-breeders not getting their animals spayed or neutered, and having unexpected pregnancies, or intentionally having pregnancies because "it's cute". The aim for most responsible breeders is to breed toward a specific goal-- and they should only be doing crosses which progress toward that goal. Here's an example of the breeder's code for hamsters: http://groups.msn.com/InternetHamsterAssoc/breederscode.msnw

P.S. ... remember also, I've done my share of "rescues" from the pet store... so I'm even taking animals that I myself have not produced.

I really wish there was some sort of certification for breeders. it is difficult to tell the good from the bad from just a glance

So, change the listing to say you're rehoming the little guys.
