How good is indoor satellite radio reception? - pinkoos - 05-20-2008

I have XM in the car and it doesn't receive any signal in the garage, so I was wondering how do the radios receive the satellite signal in the home or office?

I'm thinking about getting one of those Pioneer Inno portable satellite radios mainly for my office, but also for on the go.

But, if the signal sucks indoors, what's the point?

Anybody have one of these?

Brand new at Best Buy is around $250. Refurbished on eBay is around $110.

Of course, an XM subscription would be required as well.

I bought a portable XM model and placed the antenna near a window with good reception. I have seen repeaters available if you don't have a window facing the right direction, but have no experience using them.

Antenna in window if facing the right direction or there are roof antenna solution(s), including the capability of multiple recievers on one antenna.

A car antenna that requires a ground plane may not work in a window or on a roof. (unless you make a small ground plane).

There are also indoor signal repeaters.

I have the XM Roadie and it came with a "home" kit. They suggest putting the antenna near a window, which works ok for me since the stereo is right next to a window. But I also have DirecTV, which carries about half of the XM channels, and it's much easier to just hook the dish up to my stereo if I want to listen to it at home.

I bought the Inno for my SO last Christmas. Reception is fine as others say if you have it near the window. You will need the car kit for decent reception. I also got that for her and it works well. She doesn't even have it mounted on the outside, just laying on her dash. She says she does get a short dropout from time to time going under overpasses.

I have xm radio at home and my antenna sits in a south facing window, works great. Mine is pretty sensitive though, it has to be placed "just right." My dad does not have that problem. I attribute the difference to our windows. He has old single pane windows while I have newer double pane windows with a built in screen cover.

I know someone who had outages for sometimes weeks at a time with XM. It was usually just days. XM would blame a variety of things, often the weather. Anyone else have that experience?

Brother in law uses XM at work and at home, has the small receiver that he schleps back and forth.
No problems with reception either location, and the home one isn't that close to a window.

We have XM on the DirecTV as well, and have wireless speakers in the yard/deck/garage.

I have trouble with reception during the winter. Have to place the antenna "just right" or I get nothing. I'm not sure if it is atmospheric conditions or what.

We've had XM for just over 3 years and I can only remember one time where it went out for about a day. Apparently there was a problem with the satellite. Other than that, I only lose reception under certain overpasses (always the same ones) and when driving near the hospital where my wife is going to have our baby. I think it's because there are tall buildings on both sides of a narrow road. I imagine it could possibly be the same when driving through a big city, if the buildings are close enough.
