15% sounds so much better than saying I went from 32 mpg to 37 mpg.

For the past week or so (since the last fillup), I decided to run the experiment of never driving over 70 - whenever possible (traffic permitting), I set the cruise control around 67-70. My commute is about half highway, half city driving. Doing some quick math, this adds maybe a minute to my commute. I don't even notice the difference.

So - that one change - going from driving like everyone else on the freeway (~75 mph) to driving around 67-70 mph saved me close to $6 in a week and a half. That works out to $16/month - enough to pay the cable bill and buy a celebratory (cheap) lunch.

To heck with the mileage improvement, where does one have live to get a $16/month cable bill?

Try running at 55-60mph. If you don't get run off the road and killed, you'll see even better mpg.

My fuel economy went up 10% by changing the time I leave for work in the morning. By leaving at 5:30 AM vs 6:30, I reduce the traffic I encounter by about 75% and, even in city driving, I can use the cruise control half the time. Speed limit is 45 and I set the cruise at 50. My mileage went from around 24 to almost 28. I still get stuck in traffic going home though.

I have a $13 cable bill. Of course it's the broadcast basic package (about 10 channels or so in my area). We could get most of them over the air, but our cable internet is a good bit cheaper when bundled with TV service.

easy - $13/month for cable...$3 meal deal at the cafeteria. I didn't say it'd be a GOOD lunch Wink

I actually was curious what kind of mileage I'd get driving 55 - but don't have the fortitude to try it. I just envision being rearended within the first mile...
