G4 iMac - What's the best way to connect a wireless keyboard & mouse? - kj4btkljv - 05-20-2008
I've got a G4 iMac that I want to use up in the kitchen, under the counter. What's the best way to hook up a wireless keyboard and mouse to this thing? Does a USB Bluetooth adapter work with the new Apple BT Keyboard and Mouse? Could that be the only way? I'd really like to use an Apple Keyboard, since it's got all the Apple buttons...

Yes. Apple only supports the D-Link DBT-120 rev. 2 or higher. If you get one of those, be sure to update its firmware with Apple's Bluetooth updater.

I've tried the IO Gear offering, while it works, it isn't seamless. I find myself having to remove and reinstall the dongle every time I restart. Once it is all synced everything works though.

since all the apple keyboards are BT, then yes you will need a USB BT thing
there are tons of nice wireless mice/keyboard combos out there -- some in white even

I have several different USB BT dongles here, most from Geeks, all of them under 10 bucks.

The keyword was "supports," BGnR.
Apple's firmware updater will only recognize the D-Link.

The ONLY reason that D-Link needed to be "UpDated" was because of Apple's draconian blocks dropped long ago.
Apple now uses standard BT protocols now, D-Link no longer needed.

Not at all.
The firmware update enables early initialization in order to support start-up key functions like option to select the boot volume, command-s to enter single-user mode, shift to enable safe boot, and also to allow wake up via mouse or keyboard.
Those functions will only be supported on either on-board Bluetooth or on a firmware-updated DBT-120.
It has nothing to do with "blocks."
