SWF files..wont play in my flash player.. - Kraniac - 05-21-2008

I downloaded a an swf (shockwave flash) file using download Helper and Firefox..some video of my son.

I can't get this thing to play anywhere. Is there any other reliable, simple way to download these files?

The file size reads at about 2.5 meg..i think the info is there, it's a short video of him pitching.

Info on SWF translation or players? I'd like to, ideally, convert it to a common format if that's possible

Flash video isn't a SWF. That's just the player window. You need to get the FLV. It's probably referencing a file on the web server that was relative to the original location of the SWF.

If you get the FLV, you can play it in VLC.

There are some utilities to download such things. Check MacUpdate.com

I use OmniWeb, hit the "page info" button, reload and then it'll show you all the associated files. Click the FLV and Save as...

There is way to do it in Safari. When the file starts playing, open the Activity option in the Window Menu. If the website has not obfuscated the stream, there should be a file matching the approximate size downloading.

john dough found a solution that works on some sites that have tried to hide content.

No need for VLC to play FLV video. Just install the Perian QuickTime component.
