Best OS 9 Utility to recover files from hosed disk? - Buzz - 05-22-2008

client's eMac seems down for the count because of bad HD... boo, hiss, bad.

client ordered new 24" iMac from Amazon today... yeah!, clapping noise!, good!

now gotta get info off old eMac somehow, and for whatever reason, it seems to like being booted into 9.2.2 from an external drive better than OS X. so, what can I use to get to the hidden info? DW for OS 9 says directory is too hosed to rebuild. Norton sees the drive in DiskDoc mode, but not in recover mode, and DD fails after a short while, so directory ain't getting improved w/ any haste. TechToolPro doesn't put a dent in it either. Panther/Tiger installers don't see disk, and while Disk Utility sees it, it craps out, failing to repair it.

hoping for an OS 9 utility that will let the recent files be reclaimed, then off it goes for target practice, or a school w/ a decent tech to resurrect it. all good ideas appreciated. thanks,

Buzz

sometimes Data Rescue works where Diskwarrior doesn't.

have you tried DW 3 that boots under OS X?

Was the emac running OS 9 on the disk you are trying to get files off of? If not try the latest Diskwarrior and run it from the CD.

left DW 3 on from 9PM last night to 2PM this afternoon, whereupon it shut the computer down, and I've been trying the available alternatives around here ever since. link for Data Rescue Classic is broken; as noted, eMac is liking OS 9 better for the time being... thanks.

yank it outta there, put into an external, then work on it with your regular OS X tools on your regular machine.

Try DW 4.

Data Rescue. I never get rid of anything so could probably find you an OS9 version if you need it.

hal, yanking is too robust a chore for me these days, and Baby Buzz isn't quite ready to tackle that precise of an operation yet. plus, the cost of the local pros vs. the value of the machine is skewed in the wrong direction. gotta wait for lower cost, friendly help, for a major overhaul, and try whatever software utils in the time being. it's kinda baffling that it plays so much nicer in OS 9 from an external than from Panther or Tiger, whether from optical or HD. heck, after he gets his new 24" iMac next week, I'm kinda hoping he gives up on getting at the old data, though I know some of it is important. MM-not got 4, this is first time 3 had such a problem; no clue why the machine shut down after 17 hours of chugging away in DW3... I had it take over a couple of days before, and the machine(s) didn't shut down before finishing.

Will it run target disc mode?
