Sony Wins the Battle But Loses the War. Some of us knew this would happen!! - BigGuynRusty - 05-22-2008

Snippet.:
"Overly expensive players, unspectacular features, and a lack of competition will put a quick end to the Blu-ray's victory dance.
By Lance Ulanoff

People amaze me. They truly believe that because the format war is over, we can all sit back and enjoy a steady stream of cheap Blu-ray players, media, and content. What economics class did these people attend?
Sony's victory over HD-DVD left just one format standing─and absolutely no competition. The lack of competition means that prices are likely to remain inordinately high or, even worse, they can go up. Yeah, you heard right. Examples of this kind of thing abound: Look no further than the broadband market to understand how this all works."

The "battle" involved manufacturers deciding which technology they would go with. The manufacturers have sided now with Sony. Once the initial rush settles, these manufacturers will be doing all they can to lower prices in competition with each other. Sony will ultimately still "hold the keys" to the technology, but the manufacturers will be in control of all the other factors in production costs, and that's where we'll start to see competitive pricing.

Chill, man. Wink Go buy a PS3.

The real battle will be to displace DVD, just as the format war between DVD and DiVX in the late '90s was to determine which format would go up against VHS.

Stupid article.

I called them out on this too, a couple weeks before it happened I believe (somewhere on this forum). In a way, HD-DVD took the lead even after they dropped out with all their clearance pricing and offers for free discs.

After reading about the HDMI 1.2 and 1.3 specs, it seems that the feature set we currently have for BluRay is pretty much never going to change. I don't know exactly what else people could ask for, but the PS3 seems to have it all, in terms of audio formats anyway. If they were to change the standard now that would effectively alienate all the previously sold BluRay players in the world.

Beta, HD, BluRay in the DustBin of history.

Hang on, are you saying the difference between a regular DVD and a Blu-ray DVD is only barely discernible at five feet?

Are you BLIND?

I just went back and read the entire article -- really stupid article. The guy makes so many incorrect analogies and draws so many incorrect conclusions I'm embarrassed for him.
