I've been paid by winning bidder via PayPal...safe to ship item now? - pinkoos - 05-22-2008
Since I'm not very experienced with this, I thought I'd check with you guys.
The winning bidder has paid the full amount into my PayPal account. My PayPal account shows the payment as "instant."
Now, is it safe to go ahead and ship the item? Is there any way the buyer can "retract" the payment or something fishy like that after I ship?

As long as it's not an echeck and the buyer is verified, ship it. Yes, the buyer could always do a charge back or make some other complaint. Are you sending him what you described and what he paid for?

How do I tell what kind of payment it is? PayPal just says "instant" for the payment type? Does that it means it was drawn from his checking account? Or, paid via credit card?
When I have paid somebody via PayPal in the past, the money is always immediately withdrawn from my checking account. PayPal also has my credit card on file as a "backup" form of payment.
Yes, he is verified and has great feedback on eBay.
He got a good deal for sure. I didn't end up with such a good deal after all the eBay and PayPal fees as well as on the winning bid on the item. Next time I sell through eBay (if there is a next time), I'll set a reserve amount!
I'll just chalk this one up to a learning experience as this was my first time to sell on eBay.

Paypal will tell you if the funds have not cleared yet. It sounds like they did. I was paid with an echeck one time and it took 15 days to clear, in that case, I did not ship until it did.
I always look at the fees from ebay and Paypal as the cost of doing business. If you know what they are upfront, you can decide whether or not you want to use them.

Instant payment is just what it says. They pulled it from his bank acct or CC. You'll see the $ reflected in your PP balance as well. If you see the balance then he cannot recall the payment unless he files a dispute. Make sure you send via a delivery confirmation method to CYA.

Yeah...this was an aluminum iMac with Apple Care that I had up on the Houston craigslist for a couple of weeks with, what I thought was a steady flow of low ball offers.
Turns out I would have done better selling it for any of the offers I got locally than with what I ended up via eBay and wouldn't have to go through the hassle and worry of shipping. Oh well, live and learn.

I would advise against ever using a reserve. Reserves just turn off buyers and will usually net an even lower price, wasting the listing.
If you want your item to sell for a certain price, list it Buy It Now at that price and be done with it. It'll either sell at a price you're comfortable with, or it won't sell. No worry about it going low.
I'm constantly telling people to do BIN listings, and they rarely do, then complain when they don't get what they wanted.

Yeah, I had actually set a BIN price, but as soon as somebody placed a bid, the BIN option disappeared. I learned after the fact that this is normal if no reserve price has been set. I don't really blame eBay...I just didn't educate myself enough prior to putting the iMac up on eBay.

That should only happen after receiving a bid that exceeds the BIN price. This is not the first time I've heard someone say this recently -- I wonder if eBay has changed how this works.
