c'mon.... you KNOW it's foolish to do so , but most here will go on and update w/o backing up first... just a public service...

Like I always do...I just ran it on a G5 and an iBook w/o repairing permissions...without backing up...and all is well in the world after restarting.
I will be doing the same later on my MBP and iMac. No worries.
On the G5...I have never fresh installed since it came loaded with 10.2(?)...always just upgraded and upgraded, etc...still runs like a champ after all these years on 10.5.3.

In case my mac gets "hosed" by the update? Maybe it'll "break" something. But didn't the last update "break" stuff, too?
The only safe computer is one that's in a box in the closet, unplugged.
But here in the real world, an update is just an update.
You recommend doing a different kind of backup than I do every day, anyway? An "extra extra" backup?

I usually do a cloning before I install an OS backup. It's pretty easy to go back to in the update hoses your machine.
Not sure about time machine and OS updates, tho.

So, you actually do an "extra extra" backup, a clone, different from your regular backups? Or do you only back up when you do updates? What do you do for backups the other 99% of the time?
If the machine is "hosed", how can you tell? Does it get wet? Do you actually see the hose? I'd imagine if a computer is plugged in, if it gets wet, that's gotta be bad.

Can't tell you how many times I've heard, "I've always done this and never had a problem." And it's true... until you do. THEN you'll get religion.
