update Mail.app without 420MB 10.5.3 ? - thermarest - 05-29-2008

My 10.5.2 is running very well, and I was reading down the list of fixes in 10.5.3 and saw nothing that looked important to me until I got to the Mail section. I have been having instability and odd, irritating behavior when I attach several even smallish photos, 60kb up to several hundred kb. I looked around on apple.com and didn't see a way to update just Mail. Anyone here know of a method?

Throw caution to the wind! Walk under a ladder. Let a black cat cross your path. Step on a crack. Download and install Apple's latest update.

You'll feel so liberated!

I'll add my 2ยข worth.

I don't get too concerned with a Incremental update. But to be honest I have a couple different ways to go back if something did go wrong.

I ran the update through software update even though a lot of people swear by downloading the combo update and running that.

Do you back up your current system setup/files?

Not to be dense, but I'm only seeing 198MB. Two different Macs. One is my client's last gen white 20" iMac and the other is my late 2006 Core 2 Duo MacBook. I'll check on my 14" iBook G4 and see what it is reporting. Getting a 198MB system update with the iBook. That makes three systems weighing in at less than 200MB for the 10.5.3 update. Where's the 420MB number coming from?

"Where's the 420MB number coming from? "

Likely it's the size of the unpacked update. When you download an update, naturally, it's packaged, compressed. It unpacks itself to its actual size after the download.

Oh. Okay. Thanks.

I've never measure my updates that way. Typically I measure updates by their download size. I bill by the hour.

I downloaded the Combo updater last night, since I like to keep those on hand for any clean installs I might need to do later. It was 531MB!

Things have sure changed, eh?

Thermarest, realize that the updated Mail might need to access other updated components within the greater 10.5.3 update.

Just do it.

I'm so confused. Four computers now, each an 198MB download via Software Update. Everyone is making it sound like they are comparing the download size of the update. I wonder why my 10.5.3 download is so much smaller then everyone else's.
