I saw a refurb at Fry's this weekend for $55.

Toner cartridge $134. Printer comes with a"starter" cartridge. What is that, one half, one-third of a regular cartridge? I'm only asking because this is tempting. I just get tired of paying thru the nose for ink.

$134 if you are buying from Amazon...much cheaper elsewhere...and the starter cartridge you can fill up easily with super, dirt cheap toner refill kits on eBay or any other place.

Bought 2 Brothers last year for about the same price...purchased 2 toner refill kits off eBay for $20 shipped (each kit would refill the cartridge 4 times)...and gave them as Christmas gifts.

It's $134 if you buy the printer AND an extra toner cartridge. The cartridge by itself is $46.24:

The starter cartridge is rated at 250 copies (according to some of the reviews on the Amazon page), but evidently some people are getting more than that. The high yield cartridge ($46.24) is rated for 2500 pages. This is probably not a good choice for a printer if you are doing quite a lot of printing, but for lighter duty it will likely work well.

Wait for the 2170W to go on sale - it was $89 shipped at Buy.Com last week. Networkable and wireless. I have one and it's great. The starter cart says 1000 pages vs 2000 (reg cart) or 3000 (if you buy the super duty cart)

Unless you were able to get that HP p2015 for $146 (and apply the $125 rebate), I'd say stick with the 2170. Does that have PS level 3 and/or duplexing?

And what about RAM?

For you, Blooz, the RAM/PS 3 is going to be more important than others. I got that HP printer for $3.36 (they knocked off an additional $25 at register, to $119.99, and then I still get the rebate!) - and the toner cart was full sized.

BUT -- I network it via the Airport Extreme USB port (but any old mac would do, via Bonjour), and the duplexing and PS level 3 would be critical. Brother uses BrotherScript emulation.

Some have ram slots, some not. The HP had a slot and I got the RAM for $11, no shipping. (thanks, NO-OSX) -- so it now has 288MB.

There are D models of it - and they also get the rebate until June 30, so you might want to look around. THey list for $400. (the DN model is duplexing and networking).

The plain model has "manual duplexing" - which means it prints and tells you when to flip your docs, and holds the image to be duplexed, which is kind of a nice feature.

But nothing beats true duplexing, and the Brother models really have that down.
