Reinstall Tiger - DP - 05-30-2008

Well, a Leopard disk found its way into my hands so I thought I'd try it out on my PB G4 1.25 and after getting it installed and updating to 10.5.2 I've decided I want to go back to Tiger. The main reason is I have a dead RAM slot so I have only 1GB available and 10.5 is slower than 10.4. For instance, when I minimize something it jerks down to the Dock when I retrieve it it jerks back up. Windows open more slowly too.
So I get my Tiger disk and back up everything but when I go to Disk Utility and go to Erase my Volume Format and Name windows are greyed out. Why can't I erase?

I'll assume you restarted from the Tiger disk. Did you highlight the hard drive in Disk Utility? See if you have the option to erase disk and install on the second or third screen. It will be the one with a button called Options.
Good luck.

Can't answer, but I have a question. Would setting the window-minimizing option to Scale instead of Genie be acceptable? (Scale is faster then Genie.)

I'm sure you wouldn't let one thing like that make you switch back, so you probably are noticing more sluggishness elsewhere. Don't forget that after a fresh Leopard install, Spotlight indexing pretty much takes over a slower Mac for a while!

Actually, it's not working. I think I have an issue with my CD/DVD. When I insert the disk, it spins and buzzes then ejects the disk. I was going to CCC from an external HD.

Yes, I set it for Scale. Actually, apps open more slowly. What is Spotlight indexing, and can I "shut it off"?

Another question: After I erase, can I use Migration Assistant instead of CCC to move everything (reinstall) from the backup HD?

spotlight indexing makes my MacPro choke. that could be your problem. Once its done, it would be fine.

[quote bazookaman]spotlight indexing makes my MacPro choke. that could be your problem. Once its done, it would be fine. So how long might it take? If we're not talking months I'll leave Leopard on for now.

Re: Reinstall Tiger - bazookaman - 05-30-2008

I think mine usually starts out at lots of hours, then ends up taking around an hour or so. I suppose it depends on how much it has to index.

Spotlight indexing will turn your Mac into molasses.

It will stop eventually. The more drives attached, the longer it will take.

In System Preferences/Spotlight you can add disks you don't want indexed (I have a 'Disk Images' volume I mount infrequently and I don't want Spotlight to index it). Just drag the volume onto the Privacy pane to stop it from indexing.

That said, if you use Spotlight (and I suggest you do), it will take a while to build an index of your mounted drive(s). Updates to the index are much faster, but can still be annoying. Doesn't last long on my MBP.
