Go to Europe and have your iPod searched? - freeradical - 05-30-2008 Pretty strange idea; it looks like the police in Europe don't need to have reasonable suspicion that someone is breaking the law before conducting a search? "Draconian new copyright protection laws would give border guards the right to seize iPods and mobile phones on suspicion they contained illegal downloads. That’s the very real threat of new legislation currently being worked out by the G8 nations, of which the UK is a part, according to Canadian reports. These reports claim the Canadian government is secretly negotiating to join the US and the EU in an Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). Alongside the introduction of an international copyright law enforcement body, the deal would also see ordinary police given the right to search your digital devices for stolen files, and would also allow them to confiscate such devices. Front line security staff will be empowered to decide what content infringes on copyright laws." http://www.macworld.co.uk/business/news/index.cfm?RSS&NewsID=21445 Re: Go to Europe and have your iPod searched? - space-time - 05-30-2008 how do they prove you do not own the original CDs for example? they cannot search your home. Re: Go to Europe and have your iPod searched? - blusubaru - 05-30-2008 Hmm... so if you have any copyrighted video other than video downloaded from iTunes on it, you're screwed. You had to either break the copyright on the disc or illegally download it to get it on the iPod (recorded tv might be a gray area). Re: Go to Europe and have your iPod searched? - sekker - 05-30-2008 No way this is a practical law. Cannot be enforced - my iPod/iPhone only contains my personal mp3s. It's also a grey area when it comes to video files. There are ways to grab the video out from dvd players and recapture without DRM. That does not intentionally 'break' the DRM, and if you own the original DVD, you have the license as well. |
