Really dumb question--OS 10.4 - Gutenberg - 05-31-2008

When did Apple add the chimney to the user home in the dock? I never noticed it before. While we are on the subject of user home decoration, I think it could use some landscaping--maybe a window box or some flowers flanking the door.

Well, my 10.3 house has a chimney. Smile I guess that means neither one of us are particularly observant, because I never noticed it until you "made" me look!

Gutie,

You've got to get out of the house more.

Peculiar. I didn't have a home in my dock (I'm using Leopard 10.5.2), so I dragged my
account icon to the dock (which does have a chimney, BTW) and it immediately changes
into this:

A log icon???? Another wee Leopard anomaly to research and fix...

That odd feature has been there since the start of Leopard, laarree. Whatever is at the top of the folder list of that particular folder, gets to be the folder's icon.

I agree: it's the weirdest feature they've ever added. Why anyone would want the icon to change like that is beyond me. I personally liked the ability to add an identifiable custom icon to my Dock's folders.

My home icon has two chimneys, a three car garage, pool & hot tub and recently went into foreclosure.

I just checked--the first file at the top level of my Home folder is indeed a Log file,
which only makes sense if I click on the dock icon and it fans or stacks to display
the contents. It doesn't make sense for quickly identifying Home in your dock.

I keep waiting for someone to come up with a hack or Terminal trick that allows one to eliminate this feature.

Right click on the icon in the Dock & change the "Display as" from Stack to Folder.

Brilliant! That did it. Thanks! Once again, the Group Mind here has graced me with a
solution, through its servant, DaviDC. ;-)
