MobileMe - even slower than dotMac - gabester - 07-11-2008

I didn't think it was possible.

What I have seen so far, just trying to check my webmail, is miserable. In general the features look really nice and user friendly, but if they don't scale to support the load of dotMac users, then it's just poor implementation.

Can we maybe get a sticky thread on this as there are probably quite a few folks here who are affected by this transition?

It's been taken offline again, at least here, and at least right now.

It could be the millions of people trying to get on at one time--ya think?

Slow earlier this morning too!

As Ken said, it could be the millions of folks just hammering the servers.

yeah, give it until about 2 pm eastern

people that never actually do anything with their .mac account are now trying to

im sure steve is walking around yelling F***, F***, F*** after seeing this and the whole in-store activation crap

his employees have better things to do than activate phones all damn day...

Well, that's the thing - when you do a transition like this you've got to plan for the service interruption and minimize the downtime. Me, personally, I don't do much with my dotmac/MobileMe on a regular basis beyond use the webmail. That webmail has now been down since 11PM Wednesday night - 36+ hours ago. You've got to expect a heavier load than usual and have your servers scale to meet it. This doesn't bode well for MobileMe in the long run if we presume there will also be an influx of new users from the PC World switching over with their iPhones and Mac halo effects!

I hate the name MobileMe and I hate the idea of a dot.me account (thank goodness I can still use dot.mac) and I hate the fact that Apple couldn't plan ahead a little better and I hate the fact that two weeks ago all my emails that I had left on their server disappeared, after being stored perfectly safely for three years, due to no reason that I can find at all. Phooey.

Speaking of which... is there an option somewhere to tell Apple to NOT forward mac.com mail to me.com? I only used my mac.com address for one thing (a page that went viral for a week in 2005) which made the address useless (spam-a-lot). I'd rather just get rid of the @mac.com email.

I've yet to see the new MobileMe web portal load even once. It's never worked from my location. Most of the services mentioned, mail, iDisk, etc., work okay. But logging into the website to see the new service and new web apps, no can do.

I can imagine hundreds of people at Apple with their pants on fire. I hope they get it fixed, and the bloodbath behind closed doors at Apple Inc. doesn't last too long. Maybe we'll read about it in a business book in a year or two, a whole chapter devoted to a behind-the-scenes depiction of the "MobileMe Meltdown".
