Gift card alert--Circuit City - Gutenberg - 08-24-2008
This is notice of a possible bad deal--sort of he opposite of a Newt deal.
When a company files bankruptcy it can make your gift cards and gift certificates worthless. According to Kiplinger.com, there are bankruptcy rumors for Circuit City and holders should use their gift cards as soon as possible.
Linens n Things is honoring gift cards. Sharper Image and Bombay Company are not.

Along with rebates, gift cards have been a great scam for retailers and businesses.
Lessee--take money from consumers, in return for cards loaded with all sorts of rules on where, when or how they can be used, and then add some obscure rules that allow them to siphon away or totally eliminate their value within a certain time period, in return for nothing except perhaps convenience. A no interest loan from you to them. How nice.
Even more funny is when rebates are paid with these cards. No thanks.

That doesn't surprise me. Has anyone here been in one lately, a morgue have more
business. Ours never came back after they fired all the longtime employees. I was looking
for a couple 32" TV's for my sons at college and the place was pitiful, it was the same a
couple weeks ago when I was in there.

Just yesterday, the kids & me ran to BestBuy looking for a DVD set; they didn't have it. On a lark, I went to a Circuit City just down the block. It's exactly what Grateful11 says; it's like a morgue in there. It's just a matter of time, I think, before they file.
Respectfully disagree on gift certificates & gift cards. I love getting them, and know many who love getting them. As a husband/father, they're the only guilt-free money I get to spend on myself all year.

And yet, ironically, a *new* CC location opened up last week just down the road from me.
What were they thinking?
